You’re standing in the feed room holding a 50-pound bag of something your barn manager recommended, squinting at a panel of text so dense it looks like a legal document. Crude protein. Crude fat. Crude fiber. Calcium minimum. Calcium maximum. Selenium. You’re not sure what half of it means or which numbers are supposed to be high and which ones are bad. You feed the horse anyway because you have four more to do before dark.
This is the experience of almost every rider I’ve ever met, and nobody talks about it because it feels like something you should already know.
You don’t need to know everything on that tag. But you do need to know the right things — because a feed tag is actually telling you a fairly specific story about what a product is and isn’t, and reading it wrong is how you end up overfeeding one nutrient and creating deficiencies in others.
Why Feed Tags Are Confusing on Purpose (Sort Of)
Feed manufacturers are regulated by AAFCO — the Association of American Feed Control Officials — which sets minimum labeling standards. The tag has to include a guaranteed analysis, an ingredient list, feeding directions, and contact information. Beyond that, the design, marketing language, and visual hierarchy are entirely up to the company.
Companies that are very good at marketing know that you read the front of the bag first. The front is where you get phrases like “whole body support,” “gut health formula,” and “shine from within.” None of those terms are regulated. They mean whatever the company wants them to mean.
The guaranteed analysis panel on the back is where the actual information lives. It is also, by design, written in a way that requires context to interpret. So let’s give it some.
The Guaranteed Analysis: What You’re Actually Looking At
The guaranteed analysis lists nutrients as minimums or maximums, expressed as percentages. Here’s what that distinction means in practice:
Minimum means the product contains at least that amount. The actual amount could be higher.
Maximum means the product contains no more than that amount. The actual amount could be lower.
This matters because a feed listing “crude fiber, maximum 15%” is telling you the fiber content is somewhere at or below 15%. A low fiber maximum in a concentrated feed is often intentional — fiber slows energy availability, and some performance feeds are formulated specifically for quick energy delivery. Whether that’s what your horse needs is a separate question.
The four numbers you’ll see on every tag are crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber, and moisture. These are the basic proximate analysis figures and they give you a rough structural picture of the feed.
Crude Protein
This is the one people fixate on, and it’s also the most misunderstood.
Crude protein is measured by nitrogen content — it doesn’t tell you the quality or digestibility of the protein. A feed with 14% crude protein from good-quality soybean meal is not the same as a feed with 14% crude protein from lower-quality sources. The tag won’t tell you this directly, but the ingredient list will give you clues.
For most adult sport horses in moderate to heavy work, look for something in the 10-14% range. Higher doesn’t mean better. Horses in regular moderate work do not need high-protein feeds, and overfeeding protein means more ammonia production, more water intake, more urine output, and can stress the kidneys over time. Growing horses, pregnant mares, and heavily lactating mares are different conversations.
Crude Fat
Fat is a cool-burning, sustained energy source. Higher fat feeds are often marketed for horses who are “hot” on grain, because fat provides calories without the glycemic spike that starch and sugar create.
A standard hay-and-grain diet sits somewhere around 3-4% fat. Performance feeds often run 6-10%. Added fat — in the form of rice bran, flaxseed, or oils — has a genuine place in the sport horse’s diet, particularly for endurance, sustained conditioning work, or horses who have trouble holding weight. For most eventers doing normal ring work, 6-8% is plenty.
Crude Fiber
Fiber minimum tells you the feed has at least that amount of structural carbohydrate. In a concentrate, you’re not looking for high fiber — that’s what your hay is for. A pellet with a high fiber minimum is often actually a ration balancer or hay replacer in disguise, which might be exactly what you want, or might not be.
NSC: The Number That Isn’t Required (But Matters Enormously)
Non-structural carbohydrates — the combined starch and sugar content — are not required on a feed tag, and many companies don’t include them. This is one of the biggest gaps in standard labeling.
NSC matters for horses with metabolic issues, PPID (Cushing’s), insulin dysregulation, or a history of laminitis. For those horses, you want total NSC below 10-12%. For a healthy sport horse in moderate work, higher NSC is generally fine.
If NSC isn’t on the tag, call the manufacturer. Reputable companies will give you this number. Companies that hedge or can’t provide it quickly are a yellow flag.
The Ingredient List: Reading the Order
Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight, same as human food. The first three to five ingredients tell you what the feed is fundamentally made of.
If the first ingredient is ground corn, you have a starch-forward, fast-energy feed. If the first ingredients are beet pulp, alfalfa meal, or soy hulls, you have a fiber-forward feed. If you see “dehulled soybean meal” high on the list, that’s a high-quality protein source — better than “soybean meal” alone, which still has the hull and is less digestible.
Watch for “grain by-products” and “roughage products” in the first few positions. These are catch-all terms that can mean a lot of things, not all of them useful. They’re not automatically bad — distillers dried grains, for example, can be a legitimate energy source — but they deserve a second look.
Added vitamins and minerals appear near the bottom of the list because they’re added in small amounts by weight. You’ll see things like zinc proteinate, copper sulfate, vitamin E supplement, selenium yeast. The form matters: chelated or organic minerals (proteinate, glycinate, amino acid complex) are generally more bioavailable than inorganic forms (sulfate, oxide). Selenium yeast is better utilized than sodium selenite or sodium selenate. These aren’t dealbreakers, but they’re worth knowing if you’re evaluating two otherwise similar feeds.
Feeding Rate: The Part Nobody Reads Until Something Goes Wrong
Feeding directions aren’t just a suggestion — they’re what the manufacturer used to calculate whether the product is nutritionally complete.
Most concentrated feeds are formulated to meet vitamin and mineral requirements when fed at a specific rate per day, usually somewhere between 4 and 8 pounds for a 1,100-pound horse in moderate work. If you’re feeding significantly less than the recommended amount — common in horses who are easy keepers — your horse is not getting the micronutrient package the feed is designed to deliver.
This is one of the most common nutritional gaps I see, especially in the summer when grass is good or horses are on a diet. The solution isn’t always to feed more. Sometimes it’s to switch to a ration balancer — a concentrated micronutrient product fed in small amounts, usually 1-2 pounds per day — and let your forage carry the caloric load.
If your horse gets less than 4 pounds of commercial feed per day on a regular basis, look closely at whether a ration balancer makes more sense than a textured feed or pellet. The ingredient label will usually tell you: ration balancers have very high crude protein percentages (often 28-32%) because they’re meant to be fed in small amounts, and that high protein number is not a reason to panic.
A Note on Supplements
Feed tags do not account for supplements you’re adding on top. If your feed already has selenium at adequate levels and you’re adding a supplement that also contains selenium, you need to do the math. Selenium has a very narrow therapeutic window — the difference between adequate and toxic isn’t as wide as people assume.
Same goes for vitamin E, which I’ve talked about before in the context of dry-lot horses. If you’re supplementing fat-soluble vitamins, know what’s already in the base feed. The tag will show you the baseline.
What to Do When You’re Choosing Between Two Feeds
Pull both tags. Compare crude fat, crude protein, and the feeding rate. Then look at the ingredient lists side by side. Then ask the companies for NSC numbers and bioavailability data on their mineral sources if you can get it. That’s actually enough to make a reasonable decision.
You don’t need to become an equine nutritionist. You need to know which numbers tell you what the feed is built around, which terms are regulated and which aren’t, and what your horse’s current work level and body condition actually require.
