Your horse is loose. Swinging. Soft through his topline. Every body worker who touches him says he’s wonderfully through. And then you ask him to collect — actually sit and carry — and the whole thing unravels. He gets tight, or he gets fast, or he curls behind the vertical and goes nowhere, or he just drops his back and pushes out the front door like none of your half-halts happened.
He is not being difficult. He is not undertrained. He is telling you something specific, and if you keep treating it like a training problem, you will keep getting the same answer.
What Collection Actually Demands Structurally
Collection requires the horse to do three things simultaneously: shift weight onto the hindquarters, elevate the forehand, and maintain enough tone through the entire topline to transfer that energy upward rather than leaking it out the front or dumping it down through the back.
That last piece is the one that gets hypermobile horses every time.
Tone. Specifically, controlled co-contraction through the stabilizing muscles of the lumbosacral junction, the thoracic sling, and the deep neck flexors. Not tightness — tone. The ability to hold a shape under load without either collapsing or bracing.
A hypermobile horse has excess range of motion in his joints. That sounds like an asset, and in some ways it is — it’s why these horses look so fluid and expressive at liberty. But range of motion without the corresponding stability to control it means the horse has no reliable endpoint. When you compress his frame and ask him to carry, he doesn’t have the neuromuscular infrastructure to hold the shape. So he does what his body knows how to do instead: he collapses into his most comfortable pattern, whatever that is.
For most hypermobile horses, that pattern is one of the following:
- Falling onto the forehand with a dropped back and a fake sense of roundness
- Curling behind the vertical to escape the compression because the neck lacks the deep flexor tone to stay up under pressure
- Rushing because forward momentum is his version of stability — move fast, don’t have to balance
- Bracing through the jaw, poll, or base of neck in a reflexive attempt to create the stability his stabilizers aren’t providing
None of these are behavior problems. All of them are structural compensations.
The Stability-First Principle Most Riders Skip
There is a persistent myth in classical training that if you work a horse correctly long enough, collection will arrive naturally. And for a horse with normal joint mechanics, that is largely true. Progressive work in correct balance does build the musculature that supports collection over time.
For a hypermobile horse, that pathway is inverted. You have to build the stability before you ask for the collection, not assume the collection will build the stability. If you keep asking a structurally unstable horse to collect, you are not progressively loading a system that will adapt — you are repeatedly stressing a system that doesn’t have the capacity to respond correctly, and you are training compensations instead of capacity.

What Stability Training Actually Looks Like for These Horses
This is where riders get frustrated because “stability training” sounds abstract. Here is what it looks like concretely:
Poles and terrain over flatwork. Ground poles spaced for a slightly shorter-than-normal stride force the horse to step under with precision without your hands manufacturing a shape. The external demand creates proprioceptive input that builds the deep stabilizing muscles in a way that flat circle work does not. Cavaletti on a slight hill does even more.
Lateral work before longitudinal compression. Shoulder-fore, leg-yield, and shoulder-in at the walk build the hip stabilizers and teach the horse to step under and across without the added challenge of shortening. Do not move to collected trot until you have genuine lateral stability in walk. A horse who drifts or wobbles in shoulder-in at the walk is not ready to collect.
Half-halts that release. The hypermobile horse needs to learn that compression is followed by release, repeatedly, before he will stop bracing against it. Every half-halt you give without following it with a forward release teaches him that compression means something bad is coming and he should escape it. This is where many riders accidentally train the behind-the-vertical habit.
Transitions, not more trot. The muscle that has to fire at the transition is the same muscle that has to hold collection. Walk-trot and trot-walk transitions, ridden with a following seat and a clear forward aid after each downward, are better collection-builders than extended sets of working trot. Twenty quality transitions are worth more than forty minutes of pushing a horse who can’t stabilize.

The Tension-Suppleness Trap
Here is the piece that trips up even experienced riders: the hypermobile horse often feels so good — so supple and loose and willing — that his instability reads as training potential rather than a red flag. He’s easy to sit. He’s easy to bend. He doesn’t feel stiff or resistant, so you assume you can skip ahead.
But suppleness and stability are not the same thing, and they are not interchangeable. A horse can be wildly supple and profoundly unstable. In fact, the hypermobile horse is often the most supple horse in the barn and the least able to collect — because his suppleness is not the product of correct training, it is the product of joint laxity that has never been asked to stabilize.
When you sit on that horse and ask for collection, you are not asking him to express training he already has. You are asking him to do something his body has never successfully done. His response is going to be confusion, compensation, or evasion — not because he is difficult, but because you have not yet given him the tools.
A Note on How Long This Takes
Longer than you want it to. That is the honest answer.
A horse who has spent several years developing compensatory patterns — dropping his back to create the appearance of forwardness, curling to escape compression, rushing for false balance — needs time to unlearn those patterns before the correct muscles can take over. The neuromuscular re-patterning is real work, and it is not linear. You will have days where he feels more collected than ever. You will have days where he falls completely apart and you wonder if you’ve gone backward. You haven’t. The nervous system does not learn in a straight line.
What I tell riders working through this: judge progress in months, not rides. Look for the quality of the good moments improving and the recovery time after a bad moment shortening. Those are the real indicators that the stabilizing system is coming online.
The goal is not a horse who tolerates collection. It is a horse who can generate it, maintain it, and return to it — because he has the structural capacity to do so. That horse is possible. He just takes a different path to get there.
