Why Hypermobile Horses Lose Suspension in Transitions (And What's Actually Collapsing)

Watch a hypermobile horse through a downward transition and you’ll see it: the moment they shift from trot to walk, something drops. The neck comes up, the back flattens, the hind legs trail, and the whole horse seems to brace through the change rather than flow through it. Riders feel it as a thud, a scramble, or a sudden loss of that elastic feeling they had two strides before. Most assume the horse is behind the leg, or not listening, or needs more half-halt preparation.

Those riders are looking at the right problem through the wrong lens. Suspension loss in transitions is not a training response problem. It is a stabilization failure — and in hypermobile horses, it happens for a specific anatomical reason that no amount of transition drilling will fix.

What Suspension Actually Requires

Suspension — the moment in trot or canter where all four feet are off the ground — is not free. It is bought by the horse’s ability to store and release elastic energy through the tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue of the limbs and back. The back swings, the hindquarters load and push, the limbs spring. Everything has to sequence correctly and quickly.

A transition is the moment of highest demand on that sequencing. Going from trot to walk, the horse must absorb the forward momentum, reorganize the weight distribution toward the hindquarters, and reestablish a new rhythm — all in two to three strides. Going from walk to canter, they must recruit the hindquarters explosively while maintaining enough topline stability that the energy doesn’t just leak out through a hollow back.

Suspension requires stability, not looseness. This is the thing that trips people up. We’ve been trained to think that a supple, loose horse is a horse moving well. In a horse with normal connective tissue stiffness, some looseness is appropriate. In a hypermobile horse, looseness is the problem. Their joints move through a larger range than the passive restraints can control, which means every stride — and every transition — demands active muscular stabilization that their system may not have.

When it doesn’t have it, the transition is where you find out.

The Specific Failure Points

Hypermobile horses lose suspension in transitions at three primary points, and they usually present in combination.

1. The lumbosacral junction collapses under load

The lumbosacral junction is where the spine meets the pelvis. It is the hinge through which the hindquarters engage and the energy from the hind legs transfers forward through the back. In a horse with normal connective tissue, the passive structures at that junction provide enough stiffness that the muscles don’t have to work as hard to control the movement.

In a hypermobile horse, that passive stiffness is reduced. The junction is more mobile than it should be, which sounds like a good thing until you realize that mobility without control is just instability. When you ask for a downward transition, the horse has to decelerate by loading the hindquarters — but if the lumbosacral junction can’t stabilize under that load, the pelvis tips, the back flattens, and the horse falls onto the forehand. Not because they’re not trying. Because the hinge isn’t holding.

You feel this as a horse who consistently comes above the contact in downward transitions, or who takes several scrambling steps before settling into the new gait. The body is trying to manage a joint complex that isn’t giving it enough support.

2. The thoracic sling fails to catch the forehand

I’ve written about the thoracic sling before — the muscular system that suspends the ribcage between the forelimbs — and I’ll keep returning to it because it is consistently the underappreciated piece of the hypermobile horse puzzle. In a transition, when the horse shifts weight to the hindquarters, the thoracic sling is supposed to lift the forehand and prevent the sternum from dropping forward and down.

If the sling is underdeveloped, which it almost always is in horses that have been trained through looseness rather than out of it, the forehand doesn’t lift in the transition. It drops. The horse’s chest sinks toward the ground, the base of the neck compresses, and what should be a through, uphill transition becomes a flat or downhill one. The suspension that was present in the preceding gait disappears because the front end couldn’t hold its job when the organization shifted.

This is the horse that feels brilliant on a circle at rising trot and then falls completely apart the moment you ask for something different. The circle was masking the sling’s weakness. The transition exposed it.

3. The topline can’t load eccentrically fast enough

Eccentric loading — muscle engagement during lengthening rather than shortening — is what allows the back to absorb energy in a downward transition. The longissimus, the multifidus, the thoracolumbar fascia all have to lengthen under tension as the horse decelerates. This is neurologically demanding. It requires the nervous system to fire the muscles in a very specific way, and it requires the muscles to be trained for that kind of work.

Hypermobile horses are often quite strong concentrically — they can push — but they are frequently underdeveloped eccentrically because the training they’ve received hasn’t demanded it. Standard flatwork does not preferentially train eccentric topline engagement. Transitions do — but only if the horse can actually perform them through stability. If the horse is bracing through every transition because the lumbosacral junction and sling aren’t holding, the topline never gets the opportunity to train the eccentric loading pattern it needs.

It’s a self-perpetuating cycle: the horse can’t do the transitions cleanly because the stability isn’t there, and the stability can’t develop because the horse can’t do the transitions cleanly.

What to Do Instead of Drilling Transitions

The instinct when a horse loses suspension in transitions is to do more transitions. That instinct is usually counterproductive in a hypermobile horse. You are repeating a movement that the horse’s structure cannot currently support, which means you’re at best not making progress and at worst loading the unstable system repeatedly until something gives.

Here is what actually moves the needle.

Build the lumbosacral junction first with hill work. Uphill transitions — asking for downward transitions on a gentle incline — force the horse to sit behind and load the hindquarters correctly because the geometry of the hill demands it. The incline reduces the tendency to tip onto the forehand and gives the lumbosacral junction a mechanical assist. Three to five transitions per session, on a slope of five to eight degrees, done at the walk-to-halt level before you ever ask for trot-to-walk. You are teaching the junction to hold under load before you add speed and complexity.

Address the sling with raised pole work at the walk. Single front poles, raised four to six inches, ridden at the walk, ask the horse to lift the sternum and engage the serratus ventralis — the primary sling muscle — at the moment of forelimb demand. Do this before the transition work in your session. Three to five passes, with your attention on whether the ribcage lifts or the neck drops to compensate. If the neck drops, the sling isn’t engaging. Give it time.

Use the transition preparation to train, not just to ask. In a horse that consistently scrambles in trot-to-walk, begin your preparation six to eight strides earlier than you think you need to. The preparation is not about half-halts in the traditional sense — it is about organizing the horse’s balance so that the hindquarters are already slightly more loaded before you ask for the change. Stop rewarding the scramble. This one is harder. When a horse scrambles through a transition, the instinct is to pat them and move on. But if you consistently accept the scramble and continue the session, you’re training the horse that scrambling is the correct answer. When the transition falls apart, return to walk, reorganize, and ask again at a moment when the horse is more organized. You are not punishing them. You are refusing to build a habit on an unstable foundation.

The Timeframe Honest Answer

If you are expecting this to resolve in two weeks, I have to be direct with you: it won’t. The lumbosacral junction and thoracic sling, in a horse that has been moving through instability for years, need months of consistent, targeted work before the neurological patterns shift enough that you feel clean transitions reliably. Six to eight weeks will show you early signs. Three to four months is where the real change becomes undeniable.

That is not a long time given how long the pattern has been in place. And it is absolutely worth it, because a hypermobile horse that develops genuine stabilization through the lumbosacral junction and sling is a fundamentally different horse — not just in transitions, but in soundness, consistency, and longevity.

The transitions were never the problem. They were the diagnostic. Now you know what to build.
