Your horse feels like he’s drifting. Soft to the hand, yes — but vague. Like you’re pushing a noodle. You add leg and he sort of responds, then melts back into whatever shape gravity prefers. Your trainer tells you he needs to be more forward, more through, more connected. You agree. You try harder. He gets squishier.
Here’s what nobody tells you: that mushiness isn’t laziness. It’s protection.
In hypermobile horses, what looks like a connection problem — behind the leg, lacking throughness, rubbery in the contact — is often the horse’s nervous system deliberately avoiding the very thing you’re asking for. He’s not being evasive. He’s managing a structural situation that makes engagement genuinely risky.
What “Soft” Looks Like vs. What “Unstable” Feels Like
Softness is something you want. A supple horse who follows your aids, maintains balance, carries himself — that’s the goal. But there’s a specific quality to a hypermobile horse that mimics softness and is easy to misread.
True suppleness: The horse has tone. He accepts contact with some elastic resistance. You can feel his hind leg coming through. When you close your leg, something organized happens.
Instability masquerading as softness: There’s no resistance because there’s no real muscular stabilization available. The horse isn’t swinging through — he’s collapsing through. The contact feels light because he’s avoiding loading the joints that hurt or can’t stabilize. When you close your leg, you get a vague forward drift or a late, disconnected response.
The distinction is subtle in feel but enormous in implication. One horse needs more freedom and forward. The other horse needs stability work before he can safely give you forward.
Why Hypermobile Joints Can’t Just “Go Forward”
In a hypermobile horse, the joints move beyond the normal range the surrounding soft tissue was designed to manage. Ligaments are lax. Tendons don’t have the tension they need to act as springs. The muscles are left trying to compensate for structural instability — and muscles are not built to be primary stabilizers twenty-four hours a day.
When you ask a horse in this situation to push from behind and carry more load, here’s what you’re actually asking his body to do: engage through joints that are already working overtime to hold themselves together, load a topline that is compensating for lax passive support structures, and maintain that engagement in a consistent, rhythmic way over time.
He can’t. Not without the stabilization being built first.
So his nervous system does what nervous systems do — it finds the path of least resistance. He stays quiet in the back. He drifts in the contact. He doesn’t truly swing through the loin. It looks like he’s not trying. He is absolutely trying. He’s trying to stay sound.
The Trap Riders Fall Into
When a horse feels like this, the natural instinct is more leg, more driving aids, more energy. Maybe a stronger half-halt to get him in front of the leg and then really push from behind. Maybe transitions, many of them, to generate activity.
Some of that can have a role later. But applied to an unstable horse, aggressive forward riding just amplifies the problem. You drive him onto forelimbs that are already taking too much load. You create more movement through joints that can’t control what they’re already doing. You get short-term activity that looks like improvement and long-term deterioration that you won’t see coming until something breaks down.
I’ve watched this cycle more times than I can count. The horse gets “activated,” looks better for a few weeks, starts coming up stiff or choppy, the rider backs off, the horse gets “lazy” again, repeat. If your horse cycles through working and not working without a clear external reason, instability is high on my list.
What Stability Training Actually Does
When I talk about stability work for hypermobile horses, I mean building the deep, intrinsic muscle tone that the passive structures can’t provide. This is not the same as collection. It’s not just transitions. It’s deliberate, low-load work that asks the horse to find support from the inside rather than relying on momentum or your hands to hold him together.
Concretely, this looks like:
- Slow transitions within the gait. Medium walk to collected walk without halting. Working trot to a very slow, deliberate trot with genuine weight-bearing behind. The goal isn’t activity — it’s control.
- Halt-walk-halt on a light rein. You want him stepping under from a place of organization, not because you drove him there.
- Hill work at a walk. Uphill asks the hindquarters to load under a gradient that forces genuine stabilization. This is some of the best early stability work I know for these horses.
- Cavaletti at walk. Raised poles disrupt the pattern of “drift and avoid” and ask each leg to operate independently with intent.
- Lateral work in very small doses. Leg yield that is precise and short — not to generate movement but to ask one hind leg to step under while the other stabilizes.
Notice what’s not on this list: long trot sets, chasing forward, working through resistance. Those come later, once you’ve built something to work with.

Reading the Horse Honestly
The hardest part of this is resisting the label. “He’s just lazy.” “He’s being evasive.” “He’s gotten away with this for too long.”
Maybe. But in my experience, the horse who feels vague in the contact and behind the leg without a clear behavioral pattern — no ear-pinning, no resistance to grooming, no obvious sour behavior — is telling you something structural. He’s not making a choice. He’s making a compensation.
Look at him on a lungeline without a rider. Does he drift behind the vertical even without contact pressure? Does he travel flat behind, no matter how forward you send him? Does he look almost comfortable but oddly disconnected from his own hindquarters? Those are hypermobility flags.
Have a bodyworker who understands soft tissue assess his lumbar and sacroiliac region. Have your saddle fit re-checked — a saddle that bridges even slightly will cause a hypermobile horse to lock through the back in self-protection, which looks exactly like that vague, not-quite-there feeling.
And then start asking different questions in your ride. Not “how do I get him more forward?” but “where is he avoiding load, and what does he need before he can safely give me more?”
This Is a Long Game
I want to be straight with you: if your horse is genuinely hypermobile, the timeline for building real stability is not six weeks. It is more likely six to twelve months of consistent, smart work before you see a horse who can carry himself without relying on compensation patterns.
That’s not a reason to despair. It is a reason to stop spending those months doing work that makes the problem worse.
The horse who looks lazy and vague in the contact is not a project to muscle through. He’s a horse who needs you to understand what’s actually happening — and to train him accordingly.
