Show Season Starter Pack: Ring-Ready for Under $300

Show season is here, and if you’ve been putting off updating your show wardrobe, I get it. Between entries, vet bills, and the general black hole that is horse ownership, spending hundreds on show clothes feels… optional.

But here’s the thing: you don’t actually need to drop $500+ to look put-together in the ring. With the right pieces and some strategic shopping, you can build a complete show kit for under $300.

I’ve done the math so you don’t have to.

Quick Comparison: The $300 Show Kit

Item Brand Price Notes
Show Breeches Free Ride Lux Zip $95 My daily wear, Full Seat
Show Shirt Free Ride Cassidy $65 Clean, classic, breathable
Competition Jacket Asmar All Weather Rider ~$175 (30% off) Multi-season workhorse
Total ~$335 Or mix-and-match below for under $300

Budget-Buster Option: $211 Total

Item Brand Sale Price Original
Show Breeches Free Ride Tweed Bondie (Grey) $30 $99 (70% off!)
Show Shirt Free Ride Cassidy $65
Base Layer Free Ride Eliza $21 $70 (70% off!)
Competition Jacket Free Ride Tweed Hunt Coat $45 $150 (70% off!)
Total $161 Leaves room for show fees

The Breeches: Free Ride Lux Zip

I’ve written about these before because I genuinely can’t shut up about them. The Free Ride Lux Zip Breeches are what I reach for every single day — schooling, showing, all of it.

Why they work for shows:

  • Full seat grip that actually stays put
  • Clean lines (no weird seaming or bulk)
  • Runs long, which is great if you’re tall or hate the ankle gap
  • Lightweight enough that you won’t melt in summer shows

At $95, they’re not the cheapest breeches on the market. But they’re also not $200+, and the quality is there. I’ve had mine for over a year of near-daily wear and they’ve held up beautifully.

The Budget Play: If you’re in hunter land and want to try the hunt seat look, the Tweed Bondie breeches are currently 70% off at $30. Thirty dollars. For breeches that actually fit well. Sometimes the sale rack wins.

The Show Shirt: Free Ride Cassidy

The Cassidy Show Shirt is my go-to for a reason: it’s clean, breathable, and doesn’t look like every other white show shirt in the warm-up ring.

What I like:

  • Technical fabric that wicks (crucial for summer shows)
  • Fitted without being skin-tight
  • Collar sits nicely without getting weird under a jacket
  • Available in colors beyond white if you’re feeling bold

At $65, it’s competitive with most quality show shirts. The Amelia is also excellent if you prefer a slightly different neckline — honestly, you can’t go wrong with either.

The Jacket: Where Asmar Shines

Okay, here’s where I mix it up. For competition jackets, Asmar Equestrian makes some genuinely beautiful pieces — and right now they’re running 30% off their spring collection.

The All Weather Rider is their bestseller for good reason:

  • Actually works in variable weather (spring shows, anyone?)
  • Moves with you instead of against you
  • Looks expensive without the price tag (especially at 30% off)
  • Sustainable materials if that matters to you

At around $175 after the sale, it’s an investment piece. But this is the jacket you’ll wear for years.

The Budget Play: Free Ride’s Tweed Hunt Coat is currently $45 (down from $150). If you need something functional for the hunter ring and don’t want to spend more than dinner out, grab it before the sale ends.

Building Your Kit: Three Price Points

The Minimalist ($161)

  • Free Ride Tweed Bondie Breeches (grey, $30)
  • Free Ride Cassidy Show Shirt ($65)
  • Free Ride Eliza Base Layer ($21)
  • Free Ride Tweed Hunt Coat ($45)

This is genuinely wild value if you catch the sales. Full show outfit for under $165.

The Sweet Spot ($255)

  • Free Ride Lux Zip Breeches ($95)
  • Free Ride Cassidy Show Shirt ($65)
  • Free Ride Lux Breeches in White for Dressage ($95)

Skip the jacket for now, get two pairs of quality breeches you’ll actually wear. Add a jacket later when budget allows.

The Full Package (~$335)

  • Free Ride Lux Zip Breeches ($95)
  • Free Ride Cassidy Show Shirt ($65)
  • Asmar All Weather Rider (~$175 after 30% off)

This is my actual recommendation if you can swing it. Quality pieces that will last, mix-and-match for schooling and showing, and you’ll look polished without trying too hard.

What About Sun Shirts for Summer Shows?

If you’re showing in warmer months (which, let’s be real, is most of the show calendar), a dedicated sun shirt might be smarter than a traditional show shirt.

The Free Ride Sara Sun Shirt is UPF-rated and breathable enough for those August shows where the warm-up ring feels like a sauna. At $65, it’s the same price as their show shirts but with better sun protection.

My Honest Take

Here’s the truth: you don’t need expensive clothes to ride well. Judges aren’t going to place you higher because you’re wearing a $400 jacket.

But feeling put-together matters. When your clothes fit right and don’t distract you, you can focus on your horse. That’s what this is really about.

The brands I’ve linked here — Free Ride and Asmar — are ones I actually wear and stand behind. They’re not paying me to say nice things (though I do earn a small commission if you shop through my links). I recommend them because I’ve tried a lot of show clothes, and these are the ones I keep reaching for.
